What does a year of study in France really cost when you leave from Abu Dhabi, Dubai or Sharjah? Tuition, the money the visa section wants to see, the fees paid in the Emirates, the housing deposit, insurance and transport, converted into dirhams at the Central Bank of the UAE rate.
Which exchange rate does this budget use?
One rate, stated once, and why it moves.
Every conversion on this page uses the euro rate published by the Central Bank of the UAE for 28 October 2026: €1 = AED 4.088278, a mid rate taken at 6 pm UAE time. The dirham does not float: the UAE Government portal states that it has been pegged to the US dollar since February 2002, at AED 3.6725. Your budget therefore moves with the euro against the dollar. On 15 October 2026 the same CBUAE page showed AED 4.1204 per euro, so a €10,000 bill cost about AED 320 more two weeks earlier. Keep a margin of a few per cent, and treat the euro figures as the reference: schools, the visa section and Service-Public all set their amounts in euros.
How much is tuition in France for students from the UAE?
Public fees are set nationally; private fees by each school.
Tuition depends first on the type of institution, then on your passport. Campus France, the French public agency for international students, publishes the fees of public institutions: for 2026-27, students from outside the European Union pay €2,902 a year for a bachelor’s (licence) and €3,950 for a master’s. Emiratis and expatriates with Indian, Pakistani, Egyptian, Filipino or other non-EU passports fall into this category. Campus France explains that the real cost, between €10,000 and more than €15,000 per student per year, is largely funded by the State. Many public programmes are taught in French, though, and Campus France UAE asks for French at B2 level unless the programme is taught in English.
Private institutions set their own fees, typically about €6,000 to €18,000 or more a year according to Campus France. Most English-taught programmes for international students sit in this segment.
| Type of programme | Yearly tuition | In AED |
|---|---|---|
| Public university, bachelor’s, non-EU student | €2,902 | about AED 11,860 |
| Public university, master’s, non-EU student | €3,950 | about AED 16,150 |
| Private institution, typical range | €6,000 to €18,000+ | about AED 24,530 to AED 73,590+ |
| AI2 Bachelor in Applied AI, Years 1 and 2 | €9,000 | about AED 36,790 |
| AI2 BSc final year (top-up) | €9,900 | about AED 40,470 |
| AI2 MSc Year 1, after the AI2 scholarship | from €10,500 (standard €12,500) | from AED 42,930 |
AI2’s full fee rules, including the 18-month direct entry and the Fast-Track, are on the AI2 tuition fees page.
How much money must you show for the visa?
Service-Public, the official site of the French administration, sets the resources for a student visa at at least €877.50 a month (verified 1 August 2026): about AED 3,587 a month, AED 43,050 for twelve months. This covers living costs; tuition comes on top.
The Campus France UAE checklist for the long-stay study visa (PDF, July 2026) goes further: your account, or your sponsor’s, must hold the total for at least the first year after arrival, meaning the monthly amount for living and accommodation plus tuition. The PDF still prints 877 euros; the legal figure is now €877.50.
| How you are funded | Documents on the UAE checklist |
|---|---|
| Self-funded | Salary certificate, last 3 months of bank statements, trade licence if self-employed |
| Sponsored, often by a parent | Sponsor’s passport and UAE residency visa copies, a signed financial guarantee letter, 3 months of statements and a salary certificate |
| Scholarship holder | The scholarship letter |
Our proof of funds guide shows how to present a sponsor letter and statements that add up.
What fees do you pay in the UAE before you fly?
Roughly AED 1,000 in the Emirates, then one tax on arrival.
Every UAE resident going to France for more than three months completes the Études en France (EeF) pre-consular step with Campus France UAE, then lodges the visa file at the VFS Global branch in Abu Dhabi.
| Fee | Amount | When and how |
|---|---|---|
| Campus France UAE pre-consular fee | AED 340 to 700 | By bank transfer, only after the EeF payment email. The FAQ gives AED 340; the visa page says AED 400 in its steps and AED 700 in its fees section |
| VFS Global service charge | AED 99.08 | At VFS Global Abu Dhabi, when you lodge the file |
| Visa application processing | AED 201 (€50) | At VFS Global Abu Dhabi |
| VLS-TS validation tax, in France | €100 (about AED 409) | Online, within 3 months of arrival (Service-Public) |
Cash and cards are not accepted for the Campus France fee. Holders of a French baccalauréat, of an Eiffel scholarship or of an EU scholarship such as Erasmus+ are exempt from it, and Eiffel holders also skip the visa fee, though not the VFS charge. Only French-taught programmes need a French test (DELF B2 costs AED 680 in the UAE). Steps and delays are in our France student visa guide for UAE residents.
What does housing cost in the Paris region?
Reference rents, the deposit and the guarantor.
Rent is the largest monthly cost. Campus France’s housing guide (updated 26 June 2026) gives these reference points for Paris: about €400 to €450 a month for a room in a residence run by CROUS, the public student services network, and at least €800 for a studio on the private market. Elsewhere in France it suggests halving those figures on average.
| Housing option | Monthly rent | In AED |
|---|---|---|
| CROUS residence room, Paris | €400 to €450 | about AED 1,635 to AED 1,840 |
| Private studio, Paris | at least €800 | from AED 3,271 |
| Private student residence or shared flat | Varies | Varies |
Plan two upfront costs: the security deposit, which Campus France says is generally one month’s rent and cannot legally be higher, and the first month’s rent, both due when you sign. Landlords also ask for a guarantor, normally French; the free VISALE scheme can play that role and is best started before you leave. CAF housing aid (APL or ALS) may then lower the rent, subject to eligibility.
AI2 estimates living costs in the Paris region at about €900 to €1,700 a month, rent included, which is about AED 3,679 to AED 6,950. Our student accommodation guide covers the search and the scams to avoid.
Health cover, CVEC and transport: the smaller lines
Health. Campus France states that registering with French Social Security is free for all students; non-Europeans register online on etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr after enrolling. A complementary insurance (mutuelle) is optional and raises the share of costs reimbursed.
CVEC. The student and campus life contribution applies to students enrolling for a degree at public or private institutions, with some exceptions, and costs €105 for 2026-27, about AED 429, paid online once a year. French government scholarship holders are exempt; foreign government scholarship holders are not. Ask your school whether its programme is subject to it.
Transport. Île-de-France Mobilités sells the imagine R Étudiant pass to students under 26 living in the region: €401.30 a year for zones 1 to 5, about AED 1,641, or AED 137 a month for unlimited travel, including the Transilien line H between Paris Gare du Nord and Écouen.
Flights are not priced here: fares between the UAE and Paris vary by season and airline. Once in France, a student residence permit allows up to 964 hours of paid work a year (Service-Public), but the visa officer looks at the funds you hold before departure, not at future earnings.
A full first-year budget in dirhams: four worked examples
Tuition, the visa minimum and every one-off cost.
Each total adds tuition, twelve months at the €877.50 visa minimum, about AED 1,000 of UAE fees, and the first costs in France: the €100 VLS-TS tax, the €105 CVEC, the €401.30 transport pass and a one-month deposit on an €800 studio. Flights and a mutuelle come on top.
| Programme | Tuition | Total in EUR | Total in AED |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public university master’s (non-EU fee) | €3,950 | €15,886 + AED 1,000 | about AED 65,950 |
| AI2 Bachelor in Applied AI, Year 1 | €9,000 | €20,936 + AED 1,000 | about AED 86,590 |
| AI2 BSc final year (top-up) | €9,900 | €21,836 + AED 1,000 | about AED 90,270 |
| AI2 MSc Year 1, after the AI2 scholarship | €10,500 | €22,436 + AED 1,000 | about AED 92,730 |
These totals are the floor the visa rules suggest. At the top of AI2’s living-cost estimate, €1,700 a month, the MSc example rises to about AED 133,080. Most family budgets fall between the two.
Does the budget differ for Emiratis and expatriate residents?
The procedure is the same. Campus France UAE states that Emirati and international students resident in the UAE apply through the EeF platform, and its checklist asks every applicant for a valid UAE residency visa; a visitor without UAE residence cannot use it. Emiratis can visit France without a Schengen visa for short stays, but study longer than three months requires the long-stay student visa (VLS-TS).
Expatriates should also plan for their UAE residence. The UAE Government portal says a residence visa is cancelled after more than 180 continuous days abroad, with exceptions that include students enrolled abroad who hold a valid residence visa, and advises checking with the ICP for your emirate. Any renewal costs in the UAE are not counted here.
Emiratis can also apply for scholarships reserved for UAE nationals; see our guide to scholarships in France for UAE residents.
How can you bring the cost down?
- Apply early. At AI2, every international candidate is assessed automatically for the AI2 scholarship, and early application can count towards the excellence award.
- Pick a one-year format if your studies allow it. A final-year entry or the 11-month Fast-Track means one tuition fee and one year of living costs.
- Share housing or aim for a CROUS room: no other choice moves the budget as much.
- Plan work-study from Year 2. Under an apprenticeship or professionalisation contract, the employer’s training-fund operator (OPCO) pays tuition and you earn a salary. At AI2 this is possible in Bachelor Year 2, the BSc final year and MSc Year 2, subject to finding an employer.
Where AI2 fits in a UAE budget
English-taught programmes priced within the private range.
AI2, the Applied Institute of Artificial Intelligence, teaches every programme 100% in English on its campus at the Hub Nikola Tesla in Écouen, 22 minutes from Paris Gare du Nord. B2 English is required (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72 or English-medium schooling for the Bachelor) and no French, which suits students from UAE schools and universities who studied in English.
After Grade 12
After an HND or two years of university
After a bachelor’s
Each final year awards the AI2 diploma and prepares a professional certification recognised by the French State and registered in the RNCP, at level 6 for the BSc and level 7 (master’s level, EQF 7) for the MSc. Intakes are planned in February, May and September 2027. For February 2027, the Fast-Track scholarship (€11,000 instead of €12,500) ends on 15 November 2026 and the priority deadline is 30 November 2026. Tuition includes visa guidance from admission to arrival; housing, living costs, insurance, travel and visa fees are extra.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to study in France from the UAE for a year?
Count tuition plus at least €877.50 a month for living, about AED 43,050 for twelve months at the CBUAE rate of 28 October 2026, plus about AED 1,000 of fees in the UAE and a few hundred euros on arrival: from about AED 66,000 at a public university to AED 87,000 to 93,000 for an AI2 programme.
How much bank balance do I need for a French student visa from the UAE?
Service-Public sets the minimum at €877.50 a month. The Campus France UAE checklist asks that your or your sponsor’s account hold the first year’s total, living costs plus tuition, with 3 months of statements.
Is tuition cheaper for Emirati students?
No special rate applies. At public institutions, non-EU students, Emiratis included, pay €2,902 a year for a bachelor’s and €3,950 for a master’s in 2026-27 (Campus France).
What is the Campus France fee in the UAE?
Campus France UAE quotes AED 340, 400 and 700 on different pages. Pay only the amount in the EeF payment email, by bank transfer. VFS Global then charges AED 99.08 and the visa fee is AED 201.
Do I pay for health insurance in France?
Registration with French Social Security is free for students, according to Campus France. A complementary mutuelle is optional and paid separately.
Does the AI2 scholarship reduce the money I must show for the visa?
It lowers tuition and so the first-year total, but AI2 states that it does not count towards the €877.50 a month required for living costs.
