Funding France with an education loan? Get the number right in rupees, choose between a secured and an unsecured loan, check which Indian schemes really apply abroad, and time the sanction to your visa dates.
How much should you borrow to study in France?
Banks lend against a schedule of expenses: tuition from your admission letter, living costs for your months in France, and the one-off costs of getting there.
Two numbers anchor living costs. The legal floor: Service-Public, the French administration’s information site, sets the resources needed for a student visa at €877.50 a month (page verified 1 August 2026), and Campus France India confirms it applies from 1 August 2026. The practical figure: AI2 estimates living costs in the Paris region at about €900 to €1,700 a month, rent included. The table uses AI2 tuition as a worked example; swap in the figures from your own admission letter.
| Scenario | Tuition | Living costs | Total in EUR | Total in INR (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visa minimum only, 12 months | not included | €877.50 × 12 | €10,530 | ₹11.19 lakh (₹93,249 a month) |
| MSc Year 1, after the AI2 scholarship | from €10,500 | 12 months at €900 to €1,700 | €21,300 to €30,900 | ₹22.63 to ₹32.84 lakh |
| MSc 18-month direct entry, first 12 months | from €11,300 | 12 months at €900 to €1,700 | €22,100 to €31,700 | ₹23.48 to ₹33.69 lakh |
| Fast-Track MSc, 11 months from February 2027, applying before 15 November 2026 | €11,000 | 11 months at €900 to €1,700 | €20,900 to €29,700 | ₹22.21 to ₹31.56 lakh |
| BSc final year (AI2 scholarship possible) | €9,900 | 12 months at €900 to €1,700 | €20,700 to €30,300 | ₹22.00 to ₹32.20 lakh |
Three things that change the number
- The margin. Under the IBA Model Education Loan Scheme as published by Canara Bank, loans above ₹4 lakh carry a 15% margin for studies abroad: the family funds that share itself. On a ₹30 lakh budget, that is roughly ₹4.5 lakh in hand. Some banks count scholarships towards the margin.
- The rupee. Fees are fixed in euros, the loan is in rupees. If the rupee weakens before disbursement, the same invoice costs more, so ask for a small buffer in the sanction.
- Interest while you study. One public-sector overseas scheme states that simple interest runs during the course and that interest accrued during the moratorium is added to the principal. Paying it as you go keeps the loan from growing.

Collateral or non-collateral: which education loan fits France?
The amount mostly decides it: a year in France usually costs more than ₹7.5 lakh, where published terms start asking for security.
| Point to compare | Secured (collateral) loan | Unsecured (non-collateral) loan |
|---|---|---|
| Amount range in published terms | Above ₹7.5 lakh. One overseas scheme lends from above ₹7.5 lakh up to ₹3 crore | Up to ₹7.5 lakh under the IBA model terms, with cover from the Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Education Loans (CGFSEL), subject to conditions |
| Security asked for | Tangible collateral covering at least 100% of the loan (IBA model terms, merit admissions) | No collateral. Some banks lend more without collateral for lists of “premier” institutions: never assume your school is on a list, ask |
| Co-borrower | Parent or guardian, jointly with the student | Parent or guardian, jointly with the student |
| Repayment | Up to 15 years after the moratorium in both published examples | Same framework under the IBA model terms |
| What to check before signing | Valuation and legal fees on the property, insurance add-ons, prepayment terms | Rate, processing fee, whether the lender needs a co-applicant with a minimum income |
The two schemes differ on one practical point: the IBA model terms set the moratorium at course period plus one year, while the overseas scheme starts repayment six months after the course ends. Ask each bank for its moratorium in writing: it decides when your first EMI falls due.
Compare every offer on the same basis: total interest over the life of the loan, all fees, and prepayment terms.
What do Indian government schemes say about study abroad?
Three names come up again and again; only one covers a programme in France.
| Scheme | What the official page says | Study in France? |
|---|---|---|
| IBA Model Education Loan Scheme | Undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD and postgraduate diploma courses are eligible. Expenses include fees, travel for studies abroad, books, equipment, a computer where required, insurance and refundable deposits. Margin nil up to ₹4 lakh, 15% abroad above that | Yes, it is a loan framework, not a subsidy |
| Central Sector Interest Subsidy (PM-USP CSIS) | Interest subsidy for students with parental income below ₹4.5 lakh a year “for professional study in India” during the study period and repayment holiday. Canara Bank is the nodal bank | No, India only |
| PM-Vidyalaxmi | Collateral-free, guarantor-free loans for merit admissions to 1,425 Quality Higher Education Institutions in India, 3% interest subvention on loans up to ₹10 lakh for family income up to ₹8 lakh. Foreign education institutions are not covered | No, India only |
The PM-Vidyalaxmi portal is still worth knowing: the Press Information Bureau describes it as a single platform to apply to banks for “all kinds of education loans” and track applications. Just do not expect its interest subvention or 75% credit guarantee for France: both are tied to institutions in India.
Can you deduct the interest under section 80E?
Yes, within the rules. The Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal describes the section 80E deduction as interest paid on a loan for the higher education of yourself or a relative, taken from a bank or institution. The amount claimable is the total interest paid, with no cap stated on that page, and the deduction appears only in the list for the old tax regime, not the new one. To claim it, the return asks for the lender’s name, the loan account number, the sanction date, the total loan, the outstanding balance at year end and the interest claimed.
In practice, the deduction helps the person who pays the interest and files an Indian return under the old regime, often the co-borrowing parent rather than the student abroad. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act on 1 April 2026, with a new “tax year” concept, so ask a chartered accountant which section and regime apply to your payments and whether your course and lender qualify.
Is a loan sanction letter accepted as proof of funds for the French visa?
No official page we read on 28 October 2026 says so explicitly, in either direction. Here is exactly what they say:
- Service-Public lists a bank certificate showing a sufficient credit balance, a third party’s ID with bank evidence of scheduled regular transfers, or a scholarship certificate stating amount and duration. It does not mention loans.
- Campus France India says funding can come from private funds, university funds, or sponsoring company, agency or government funds. A self-sponsored student shows the past three months of bank statements with the first year’s finances; each sponsor provides a sponsorship letter, bank statements, the previous year’s ITR, three months of salary slips and ID. It does not mention loans either.
- France-Visas and VFS India generate the checklist for your own case when you fill in the online application. That personalised list is the one the consulate works from.
The safe reading: funds disbursed into your own account are a bank balance, which every list accepts; a sanction letter alone is a commitment to lend. If you rely on one, check your personalised France-Visas checklist, ask VFS or Campus France India first, and make the letter complete: names, amount, purpose, institution, programme and disbursement schedule. Keep the co-borrower’s statements and ITR ready, as Campus France India asks sponsors for them.
The visa minimum covers living costs, with tuition on top, so a sanction covering fees only does not show living funds. The full rules by currency are in our guide to proof of funds for a France student visa, and the VFS centres and consulates are listed in our France student visa from India guide.
Which documents do banks ask for?
Lists vary by bank but overlap heavily. Gather these early: the admission letter is usually the last piece.
Student
Admission
Co-borrower
Security
Before paying any fee, ask whether the bank lends for your institution and programme. For a private French school, have the programme page and the RNCP registration of the title ready.
When to apply: the loan timeline for 2027 intakes
Campus France India asks for the visa application as soon as you hold an unconditional acceptance letter and at least three months before the intake. Work backwards: the sanction letter or disbursed funds must be ready for VFS.
| AI2 intake | Visa application target | Loan steps |
|---|---|---|
| February 2027 | Three months before the start, so around early November 2026 | Realistic only if your loan file is already moving. AI2’s priority deadline is 30 November 2026 and enrolment with deposit closes 15 December 2026 |
| May 2027 | Around early February 2027 | Apply to AI2 in November or December 2026, take the admission letter to the bank straight away, aim for sanction in January 2027 |
| September 2027 | Around early June 2027 | Admission by February or March 2027, loan application in March or April, sanction before you book VFS. The most comfortable intake for a secured loan |
- 1Shortlist banks before admissionAsk two or three branches for their overseas terms, collateral, margin and moratorium.
- 2Prepare the co-borrower fileStatements, ITRs and property papers take longest. These double as sponsor documents for Campus France India.
- 3Apply with the admission letterSubmit the full file the week the letter arrives. Ask the bank for the sanction letter format you will need for the visa.
- 4Match disbursement, then book VFSAlign the bank’s tuition releases with the deposit and instalment dates in your admission letter. Book VFS only after the automated email that follows your Campus France interview.
Where AI2 fits in a loan-funded plan
AI2, the Applied Institute of Artificial Intelligence, teaches applied AI, data science, cybersecurity and IoT 100% in English on one campus in Écouen, 22 minutes by train from Paris Gare du Nord. B2 English is required; French is not.
A loan works best when the cost is known early and in writing. Every international candidate is assessed for the conditional AI2 scholarship automatically, and the admission letter states your programme, intake, tuition and any scholarship; AI2’s fees page says it prevails over any other document. Tuition can be paid in instalments as detailed in that letter, or in full, which may count towards the full-payment award. After the deposit, AI2 issues the enrolment confirmation for your visa file.
Each AI2 final year awards the AI2 diploma and prepares a professional certification recognised by the French State and registered in the RNCP: level 7, master’s level (EQF 7), for the MSc, with the level 7 titles certified by DATAKOO, AI2’s parent company. For programme choices after a BTech, read our MS in AI in France for Indian students guide, then compare every fee on AI2 tuition fees 2027 and the awards on scholarships in France for Indian students. As with every school, admission does not guarantee a visa. Deposit and refund conditions in case of refusal are set out in the AI2 admission letter, so read them before your bank disburses the first tuition payment.

Frequently asked questions
Can Indian students get an education loan for studying in France?
Yes. The IBA Model Education Loan Scheme, as published by Canara Bank, covers courses abroad, including travel expenses, and public-sector banks publish overseas schemes that list Europe among eligible destinations. Ask each bank whether it lends for your specific institution and programme.
Do I need collateral for an education loan to study in France?
Usually above ₹7.5 lakh. Under the IBA model terms, loans up to ₹7.5 lakh need no collateral and are covered by CGFSEL, subject to conditions, while larger loans need tangible collateral covering at least 100% of the loan. A parent or guardian borrows jointly in every category.
Can PM-Vidyalaxmi or CSIS subsidise a loan for France?
No. The Canara Bank CSIS portal limits CSIS to professional study in India, and the PIB note of 29 July 2026 states that foreign education institutions are not covered by PM-Vidyalaxmi. The PM-Vidyalaxmi portal can still be used to apply to banks for other education loans.
Is an education loan sanction letter accepted as proof of funds for a France student visa?
The official pages we read do not say so explicitly. Service-Public and Campus France India list bank balances, sponsors and scholarships. Check your personalised France-Visas checklist and ask VFS or Campus France India; disbursed funds in your own account count as a bank balance.
How much education loan do I need for a master’s in France?
For a first MSc year at AI2, after the scholarship, tuition from €10,500 plus twelve months of living costs at €900 to €1,700 comes to about ₹22.63 to ₹32.84 lakh at the FBIL rate of 27 October 2026. Subtract family savings and scholarships, then add a small currency buffer.
Can my parents claim section 80E on a loan for my studies in France?
The e-filing portal describes 80E as a deduction for interest on a loan for the higher education of self or a relative, from a bank or institution, under the old tax regime. The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026, so confirm the current section and conditions with a chartered accountant.
When should I apply for an education loan for a September 2027 intake?
Campus France India wants the visa application at least three months before the intake, so around early June 2027. Apply for the loan in March or April 2027, as soon as you hold your admission letter, and prepare the co-borrower documents before that.
Which AI2 documents can I give my bank?
The admission letter, which states your programme, intake, tuition and any scholarship, and the enrolment confirmation issued after the deposit. If your bank asks for another format, such as a fee schedule, ask AI2 admissions.
