Visa guide · Bahrain · 2027

Holding an offer from a French school and living in Bahrain? Parents’ letters, CR copies, CPR cards and the Embassy’s interview all have their place in this file. Here is what the official lists ask for, what has changed, and where you must confirm before paying.

In short: To study in France for more than three months, Bahrain residents need the long-stay student visa (VLS-TS). Bahrain is on the Études en France list, so you contact Campus France in Manama first, then complete France-Visas and lodge your file at the visa centre. Who does what in a Bahraini student visa?

Knowing who decides saves you several emails.

Four parties touch your application, and the most common mistake is asking the wrong one. France-Visas, the official portal named by the French Embassy, is where the application is created and tracked. Its visa wizard tells you, from your own situation, which visa applies, which documents to attach and what fee you owe.

Your residence decides the office. A Bahraini citizen and an expatriate who has grown up in Isa Town follow the same path, except that non-Bahrainis add proof of residence. EU citizens need no visa. If your course lasts three months or less, a different short-stay rule applies, and France-Visas will tell you whether your nationality needs a visa at all.

About the dates in this guide. The most detailed student list we could read is an Embassy document from September 2020, still hosted on VFS Global’s site. It predates some current practice, so use it to prepare and treat your France-Visas receipt as the final word. We could not open France-Visas directly while writing this page.

The sequence, from offer to passport

Seven stages, and the visa form sits near the end.

  1. 1
    Get a written acceptance

You need an enrolment or pre-enrolment at a public or private higher education institution or a higher professional training body. Service-Public F2231 sets this as a condition of the student visa.
  2. 2
    Contact Campus France in Manama

Ask how the Études en France file works for your case, what it costs and how interviews are arranged. Do this straight after your offer, not after booking a flight.
  3. 3
    Complete Études en France

Campus France describes the platform as a single electronic file covering enrolment up to the visa request, with a fee for the service.
  4. 4
    Pass the Embassy’s academic step

The 2020 list requires a letter from the Embassy’s Cultural Service, provided after an interview with that service, and says a meeting must take place before your visa appointment. Ask the Manama office which document is issued today.
  5. 5
    Fill in France-Visas

Create your account, complete the long-stay form and print what the portal generates. Give a full address in France.
  6. 6
    Lodge your file

Book through the centre and attend with your originals. Keep copies of everything you hand over.
  7. 7
    Track and collect

France-Visas tells you when your passport is available and how to collect it.

What does the Embassy’s student list ask for?

A September 2020 list: useful, but check it against France-Visas.

This is the Embassy’s long-stay student list, reorganised by topic. The notes on the right are ours.

Proving who pays

Bahraini paperwork comes through most clearly here. If a parent pays, the list asks for a certificate signed by both parents saying they will cover all expenses, a copy of a recent three-month bank statement, and copies of the parents’ passports. Then one document depends on how they earn their income:

Self-employed parent

A copy of the trade licence, the commercial registration (CR).

Employed parent

An employer’s letter in English stating name, job title, seniority and salary.

Retired parent

A pension statement in English from the Social Insurance Organisation (SIO).

If an institution funds you, a certificate of funding replaces this. AI2’s visa guidance describes the two usual forms of proof: a bank certificate showing the year’s amount in your name, or a sponsor’s attestation with proof of income. More examples are in our guide to proof of funds for a France student visa.

If you are not Bahraini, or under 18

Non-Bahraini nationals add a copy of the residence permit, valid for at least three months after the visa requested ends, plus the original CPR and a copy. A resident on a family visa should compare those dates carefully, because a degree can outlast the residence that supported it. Applicants under 18 add a parental authorisation and copies of both parents’ passports.

How much money must you show in dinars?

The rule is set in euros and rises with the French minimum wage.

Service-Public’s page, verified on 1 August 2026, sets the requirement at at least €877.50 a month. AI2’s visa guidance notes that this is 47% of the gross monthly minimum wage, so the figure rises with it. The Central Bank of Bahrain’s rate of BHD 0.418936 per euro for 29 October 2026 gives the amounts below, rounded. The dinar is fixed to the US dollar, not the euro, so recheck the rate shortly before you print your statements.

Sources: Service-Public F2231; AI2 tuition fees, read 30 October 2026; Central Bank of Bahrain. The amount in your admission letter prevails.

The 2020 list estimates two weeks to a month for processing, and one to one and a half months in summer. The French Embassy now adds a general warning: depending on where you file and the time of year, appointment and processing delays can lengthen the whole procedure, so build them into your plan. You may lodge up to six months before departure.

Planning dates are our suggestion, based on the Embassy’s estimates; AI2 dates from the apply page. AI2’s visa guidance advises starting 6 to 8 months before an intake.

After you arrive, and if the answer is no

What to do in your first months, and after a refusal.

In your first three months

Validate the VLS-TS online within three months of arrival and pay the €100 tax. This keeps your stay regular and lets you cross the Schengen border again. The visa itself lasts between four months and one year. If your studies run longer, you apply in France for a temporary student card of one year or a multi-year card of two to four years. The permit allows paid work of up to 964 hours a year, a useful top-up but not a substitute for the funds you showed.

If the visa is refused

Campus France explains that consular authorities must give reasons when refusing a student visa, and that silence for two months after lodging counts as an implicit refusal. You can ask the consul to reconsider, then write in French to the Commission de recours contre les décisions de refus de visa within two months. That appeal is compulsory before any court action. Check what happens to your deposit too: at AI2, the conditions are written in your admission letter, and you should tell admissions immediately.

Applying to AI2 from Bahrain

Your admission letter opens the whole sequence.

AI2 runs an English-taught pathway from Bachelor to MSc on its campus at Écouen, 22 minutes from Paris Gare du Nord, with intakes planned for February, May and September 2027. You apply online, attend an online interview and receive a written admission letter stating programme, intake, tuition and any scholarship. AI2 then provides the documents you need for Campus France and the visa, and visa guidance is included for every student, as our visa guidance page explains. The decision itself rests with the French authorities.

Start with the MSc Applied AI and Data Science or the Bachelor in Applied AI, and see tuition fees for the grid. Our Campus France interview questions will help with the academic step, and our Gulf guide compares neighbouring routes.
