Thinking about a French degree from Manama, Riffa or Muharraq? A small office, a useful ministry service and French lessons at school all shape the Bahraini route. This guide covers each, with a first-year budget in dinars.
How do you apply to France from Bahrain?
There is one office, and it works by message rather than by walk-in.
Start by separating two questions: which institution will admit you, and which office prepares your visa path. Campus France lists Bahrain among the 75 countries and territories covered by the Études en France procedure, so students resident in the Kingdom make a specific request through that platform, whichever way they were admitted.
The local contact is the Espace Campus France de Manama, listed at the French Embassy with the telephone number +973 17 298 623 and the address manama@campusfrance.org. Two details are worth knowing. We found no separate Campus France Bahrain website: the agency’s directory shows contact details only, unlike its offices in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. And the Embassy page, updated 1 July 2026, says its services are not open to the public, so write or call before you travel there.
What to ask in your first email
- the current Études en France fee in Bahrain and how to pay it, since we found no published figure;
- whether your interview is in person, and how soon you can book it;
- the deadlines for your level in the 2027-28 cycle;
- which language evidence the office expects for a programme taught in English.
The French Embassy strongly encourages students to contact their Campus France office, because enrolment procedures vary with nationality, previous studies and the institution chosen. Expatriates living in Bahrain should ask the same questions: the procedure is defined by residence in the country, and non-Bahrainis will need to show their residence documents at the visa stage.
Which English-taught programmes can you join?
Start from your last qualification, then filter by language.
Campus France’s Taught in English catalogue lists more than 1,600 programmes, wholly or partly in English. The choice narrows quickly once you add your level and budget.
| Your starting point | Typical French route | Fee for a non-EU student | In dinars |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Secondary Certificate, IB or A-levels | Licence, year 1, at a public university through a preliminary admission request, or a private bachelor’s through direct admission | €2,902 a year at a public university | about BHD 1,216 |
| Two years of university or a diploma | Licence year 2 or 3, or a final bachelor’s year, on file review | €2,902 a year at a public university | about BHD 1,216 |
| Bachelor’s degree | National master’s, or a private or RNCP-registered programme | €3,950 a year at a public university | about BHD 1,655 |
| Any level, private institution | Engineering school, business school or specialised institute | About €6,000 to €18,000 or more a year | about BHD 2,514 to 7,541 |
One caution on the word “partly”. A master’s can be marked as taught in English while its second semester, or its exams, run in French. Open the programme’s own page and look for the language of each course, of assessment and of the thesis defence. Each institution also sets its own admission criteria, and Campus France says only the host establishment can accept or refuse you. Our page on English proof without IELTS lists what schools commonly accept.
Do Bahraini students already have a head start in French?
School French can become a real asset, even on an English-taught course.
Many do. According to the French Embassy, a 2009 royal decree made French the second compulsory foreign language in secondary school, after English, so many pupils meet the language before they ever think about France. The Embassy also describes a Lycée français at Busaiteen with close to 720 pupils, around 120 of them Bahraini, and says French has been taught at a public university in the Kingdom since 1987.
You do not need French for an English-taught degree. It helps elsewhere: in shops and offices, and especially in a company. If you want a certificate, the Alliance française in Isa Town, founded in 1969, is the only centre in Bahrain able to deliver the official DELF, DALF, TCF and TEF tests, according to the Embassy. DELF and DALF are valid for life. Keeping up your school French makes the internship stage easier, since many French companies work in French. See how much French you really need for levels and goals.
The Embassy adds that it offers a growing number of grants for Bahraini secondary and university students to attend summer language courses in France. That can be a low-risk way to test the country before committing to a full degree. Ask the Embassy’s cultural service what is open for your age group.
Will your French degree count in Bahrain?
Ask before you enrol, while the answer can still change your plan.
If you plan to work in the public sector, seek sponsorship, or continue your studies at home, treat this as your first step and not your last. The decision belongs to Bahrain’s authorities and differs by institution, programme and purpose.
The Recommended Universities service
The Ministry of Education’s page, updated 20 October 2026, describes an online service to search recommended universities and programmes. Its most useful feature for you is the second one: you can submit a request for the ministry to review a specific programme, even if it is not on the list, and then track the request. Processing takes 7 to 40 working days, so allow two months. The attachments the ministry names tell you what it looks at:
| Attachment | How to prepare it for a French programme |
|---|---|
| Syllabus and course descriptions | Ask the school for the full curriculum in English |
| Study system: full attendance, partial, e-learning, distance or other | Get this stated in writing; include any online modules |
| Study location | Give the campus address, not only the city |
| Admission requirements | Copy them from the programme page |
| Previous qualifications and any equivalence | Secondary, bachelor’s or master’s certificates |
| ID card or passport | Current copy |
Who else is involved?
Legislative Decree 31 of 2020, published by the ministry, amended Law 3 of 2005 and set up the Higher Education Council with its own board and general secretariat, under the minister’s supervision. We could not open the Council’s website while preparing this guide, so we give no detail of its procedures: ask the ministry’s customer service, customerservices@moe.gov.bh, which body handles your case. The ministry also lists a cultural attaché in Paris, based at Bahrain’s delegation to UNESCO, whose role includes supporting students abroad.
Bahrain’s government portal shows how this plays out at home. For postgraduate admission at a public university in the Kingdom, it asks for an academic equivalency report on qualifications obtained abroad, issued by QuadraBay or DataFlow. So keep every transcript, enrolment letter and certificate in a form you can have verified.
Are there Bahraini scholarships for France?
Each scheme publishes its own conditions, so check them directly.
The ministry runs an online Scholarships and Grants service. Its July 2025 user guide says the service lets outstanding Bahraini students register and follow scholarships and grants. You record your study preferences from the options listed, view results, complete procedures, defer to the following year, or appeal. Which destinations and institutions appear is decided each year by the ministry, so check inside the service rather than assuming France is included.
French and European funding can be searched on Campus France’s Campus Bourses tool, which lets you filter by nationality, field and level. Some employers sponsor staff too: if yours does, ask for its conditions in writing before you accept an offer.
What does a first year cost in dinars?
One rate, four worked profiles.
The Central Bank of Bahrain’s table for 29 October 2026 gives €1 = BHD 0.418936. The dinar is fixed to the US dollar at 1 BHD = 2.659 USD under Decree 48 of 2001, so your costs in France move with the euro against the dollar. All figures below are rounded.
| Profile | Tuition | 12 months of visa resources | First-year floor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public licence, Year 1 | BHD 1,216 | BHD 4,411 | about BHD 5,627 |
| Public master’s, Year 1 | BHD 1,655 | BHD 4,411 | about BHD 6,066 |
| Private programme at €6,000 | BHD 2,514 | BHD 4,411 | about BHD 6,925 |
| Private programme at €18,000 | BHD 7,541 | BHD 4,411 | about BHD 11,952 |
The visa minimum is a legal floor, not a comfortable budget. For the Paris region, AI2 estimates living costs at about €900 to €1,700 a month with rent, or BHD 377 to 712. Add the €100 tax for validating your visa, about BHD 42. A student permit allows up to 964 hours of paid work a year, which helps but should not sit in your visa budget.
How does the visa fit into the plan?
The detail lives in our visa guide; here is the order.
Once admitted, you complete Études en France with the Manama office, fill in the long-stay form on France-Visas, and lodge your file at the visa centre. The French Embassy reminds applicants that a request can go in up to six months before departure and that appointment delays vary through the year. The document list, including what parents and non-Bahraini residents must show, is in our separate guide to the France student visa from Bahrain. If you are comparing neighbouring routes, see our guide to studying in France from the Gulf.
What can you study at AI2 from Bahrain?
Your last diploma sets your entry year.
Among the English-taught options, AI2 suits students who want applied AI, data, cybersecurity or connected systems, with a company phase built in. It is a private institute with one campus at Écouen, 22 minutes by train from Paris Gare du Nord. Courses are in English and French is optional, with classes offered every year. Admission is by file and online interview, without GRE or GMAT.
Straight from school
With a three-year bachelor’s
With a four- or five-year degree
Master’s or accredited engineering degree
Three master’s-level tracks are available: Applied AI and Data Science, Applied AI & Cybersecurity and Applied AI & IoT. The direct entry adds 280 hours of online platform modules and a 220-hour company project to 500 hours of Year 2 on campus; mention those hours in any ministry request, because the service asks about the study system.
Each final year awards the AI2 diploma and prepares a professional certification recognised by the French State and registered in the RNCP. At MSc level this means level 7, master’s level (EQF 7): RNCP39978, Information Systems Architect for Industrial Processes, or RNCP40554, Internet of Things (IoT) Architect, with DATAKOO, AI2’s parent company, as certifier. English at B2 is required: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72 or equivalent, and a medium-of-instruction certificate may support a waiver. Fee rules are on the tuition page, and award conditions on the scholarships page.
