Holding an HND, an NVQ diploma or two years of a degree from Sri Lanka? A practical guide to finishing a bachelor’s in France in one year: how Sri Lankan qualifications are read, what the year costs in rupees, and the steps from Colombo to the classroom.
Can you top up a Sri Lankan diploma to a bachelor’s in France?
Yes, by joining the third and final year of a three-year bachelor’s.
France builds its degrees on the licence, master, doctorate model. Campus France sets out the arithmetic: a bachelor’s requires six semesters and 180 ECTS credits, and a master’s adds four semesters and 120 ECTS. A “top-up” is simply an admission straight into the last two semesters, because the institution accepts that your earlier studies already cover the first four. Each school takes that decision itself, after reading your transcripts.
For Sri Lankan applicants, Campus France Sri Lanka draws a clear line. The preliminary admission request (DAP), filed with the French Embassy in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, applies only to the first year of a university licence and to schools of architecture. For any other level, and the third year of a bachelor’s is one of them, you contact the institution directly, follow its own enrolment procedure, and only then apply for a student visa with the admission document in hand. There is no national platform to queue in: your file starts with the school.
One more rule worth knowing before you compare offers. Campus France explains that the value of a French higher education diploma is guaranteed by the State when it is a national diploma, a degree certified by the Ministry, or a title registered in the RNCP, the national register of professional certifications. Ask each institution which of these its final year leads to, and look the code up yourself.
If you want the general picture of HND entry first, our guide to the top-up degree after an HND explains the route for all nationalities. This page stays on what is specific to Sri Lanka.
Which Sri Lankan qualifications count as two years of higher education?
Four common profiles, read against the frameworks that define them.
Sri Lanka runs two national frameworks side by side, and French admissions teams will ask where your diploma sits. The Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF), explained in the University Grants Commission FAQ, has twelve levels: level 3 is a Diploma, level 4 a Higher Diploma, level 5 a Bachelors and level 6 a Bachelors Honours. The same FAQ lists the Higher Diploma as comparable to NVQ level 6. In the national vocational framework managed by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC), the University of Vocational Technology lists level 5 as a Diploma, level 6 as a Higher Diploma and level 7 as a Bachelor’s Degree, which it awards itself.
| Your qualification | What it is | How a French final year reads it |
|---|---|---|
| Pearson BTEC HND (for example in Computing) taken at a centre in Sri Lanka | A UK level 5 qualification, listed on GOV.UK alongside the DipHE and the foundation degree | Two years of higher education. AI2 names the Pearson HND among its final-year entry qualifications |
| Pearson HNC on its own | Listed by GOV.UK at level 4, one level below the HND | Usually short of a final year; the second year of a bachelor’s is the more realistic entry point |
| SLIATE Higher National Diploma, such as the HNDIT | A state programme; SLIATE’s 2026 guideline lists the HNDIT at two and a half years | Reviewed on transcripts and syllabus: subjects, hours and the training period |
| NVQ level 5 Diploma or level 6 Higher Diploma | TVEC vocational diplomas; level 6 is listed as comparable to SLQF level 4 | Reviewed on content: computing, networks, electronics or industrial subjects carry the most weight |
| First two years of a Sri Lankan degree (state, private or external) | Part of an SLQF level 5 or 6 programme | Matches “Years 1 and 2 of a BSc”; bring transcripts showing every credit completed |
Practical tip: send the official syllabus or unit list with your transcript. A document showing module names, hours and the industrial training period lets an admissions team map your studies to a French final year without guesswork.
What does a final year in France add for a Sri Lankan HND holder?
Three gains that a diploma alone does not give you.
A State-registered title
Experience in a French company
A path to a master’s in France
Campus France Sri Lanka counts some 1,500 programmes taught in English in France, so a final year without French is a realistic plan. During your studies, Service-Public (F2713, verified 7 October 2025) allows students holding a VLS-TS or a student residence card to work up to 964 hours a year, 60% of the legal working year, without a separate work permit. The count starts when the visa is validated, and the employer must declare you to the prefecture at least two working days before you start.
AI2’s two final-year options for Sri Lankan diploma holders
Software or industrial data: choose by what your HND covered.
AI2, the Applied Institute of Artificial Intelligence, runs a three-year Bachelor in Applied AI, and its third year can be taken on its own as a one-year top-up. Two final years are open to students arriving with two years of higher education, as the programme pages state: a Pearson HND, a BTEC Level 5, a French BTS or Years 1 and 2 of a BSc, with AI2 mapping each qualification against the programme.

| Then | Mandatory company placement | Mandatory company placement |

| Careers named | AI-assisted full-stack developer, AI application developer, software engineer | Industrial data analyst, industrial IT engineer, IIoT and SCADA integrator |
Each final year awards the AI2 bachelor’s diploma and prepares a professional certification recognised by the French State, registered in the RNCP at level 6 (bachelor’s level, EQF 6). Details are on the BSc AI-Powered Application Development and BSc Data Analytics & Applied AI (Industry 4.0) pages.
Teaching is 100% in English and French is not an admission requirement; the application development year even includes a professional French and career module. The English level asked is B2: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72 or equivalent, and a medium-of-instruction certificate may support a waiver if your diploma was taught in English. Classes take place on the Écouen campus, 22 minutes from Paris Gare du Nord by Transilien line H.

After the final year: a master’s, then work in France
The top-up year is often the first of two or three.
Graduates of either AI2 final year can apply to the shared MSc Year 1, subject to an admissions review, and then specialise in data science, cybersecurity or IoT; after the Industry 4.0 year, IoT and cybersecurity are the natural tracks and data science is considered on review. A master’s-level diploma matters for staying on: Service-Public (F17319, verified 1 June 2026) lists a professional licence, a Mastère Spécialisé, a labelled MSc or another diploma at least equivalent to a master’s, obtained within the last 12 months, as the basis for the one-year job-search or business-creation permit, which is not renewable.
If your goal is to work in France, plan it as a sequence: one year to complete the bachelor’s, then the master’s, with a French placement in each.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do a top-up degree in France with a Sri Lankan HND?
Yes. French institutions can admit students directly into the final year of a bachelor’s when their previous studies cover two years of higher education. A Pearson HND, a SLIATE HND, an NVQ level 5 or 6 diploma or two completed years of a degree are the usual starting points, subject to a review of your transcripts.
Is a SLIATE HND or an NVQ level 6 diploma accepted for a final year?
They are reviewed on content as well as level. SLIATE lists its HNDIT at two and a half years, and the UGC lists the Higher Diploma (SLQF level 4) as comparable to NVQ level 6. Send your syllabus and transcripts so the admissions team can map them to a computing or industrial final year.
How much does a top-up year in France cost in Sri Lankan rupees?

Do Sri Lankan students go through Campus France for a top-up?

Do I need IELTS if my HND was taught in English?
The final years ask for English at B2 level, for example IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 72. A medium-of-instruction certificate from your institution may support a waiver, so ask for one along with your transcripts.

What can I do after the top-up year?
