Living in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi with an HND or a BTEC Level 5 diploma? How UAE residents of any nationality can complete a bachelor’s in France in a single year: how your diploma is assessed, what Campus France UAE asks for, what happens to your UAE residence while you are away, and what it all costs in dirhams.
What is a top-up year in France, seen from the UAE?
A direct entry into the last year of a three-year bachelor’s.
In France a bachelor’s (licence) is six semesters and 180 ECTS credits, according to Campus France. A top-up is an admission into the last two of those semesters for someone whose two-year diploma is accepted as covering the first four. The school decides, programme by programme, after reading your transcripts.
Campus France UAE describes the routes from the Emirates in its guide to applying to French universities. Applications to the second or third year of a bachelor’s, at public or private institutions, are made on the university’s own website and on the Etudes en France (EeF) platform when the programme appears in the EeF catalogue. For the 2027 academic year, that window runs from 1 October 2026 to 26 February 2027, with French at B2 level required unless the programme is taught in English.
Your passport does not change this route. Campus France UAE states that both Emirati and international students resident in the UAE use EeF for bachelor’s and master’s programmes at public or private universities. What decides eligibility is residence: a tourist without UAE residency cannot use the UAE platform.
For the general mechanics of HND entry, independent of where you live, read our HND top-up guide. The rest of this page deals with what changes when you apply from the Emirates.
Is your HND or BTEC Level 5 enough for a final year?
Look at three things: level, length and subject.
Pearson BTEC HNDs follow the UK scale. On GOV.UK’s list of qualification levels, the higher national diploma (HND) sits at level 5 with the DipHE and the foundation degree, the higher national certificate (HNC) at level 4, and a bachelor’s degree with honours at level 6. A top-up year is the step from level 5 to level 6.
| Your situation | What to prepare | Likely outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Pearson BTEC HND in Computing or a related subject, studied at a centre in the UAE | HND certificate and full unit transcript with credits | Two years of higher education: a final-year entry qualification named by AI2 |
| HNC only (level 4) | HNC certificate and transcript | One level short; complete the HND first, or enter the second year of a bachelor’s |
| HND or two-year diploma earned in your home country before moving to the UAE | Original documents, translated into French or English if needed | Assessed like any other: two years, in a computing, networks, electronics or industrial field |
| Two years of a bachelor’s at a UAE or overseas university | Transcripts showing every completed course and credit | Counts as the first two years of a BSc, one of the profiles AI2 lists |
| HND in business, hospitality or another non-technical field | Transcript | Right level, wrong content for a technical final year; consider a programme in your own field |
Will you keep your UAE residence while you study in France?
Check the 180-day rule and its student exemption before you resign or book a flight.
Settle this before you resign from a job or give up a flat, because it has an official answer. The UAE government portal (general provisions for the residence visa, updated 28 September 2026) states that a resident who lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously has the residence visa cancelled automatically.
The same page lists exemptions. Among them are “students enrolled in educational institutions abroad, who are holders of valid residence visas in the UAE”, and expatriate students at universities or institutes abroad, a category the portal attaches to Dubai’s rules. The portal adds an instruction you should follow: check with the ICP whether the exemption applies in your emirate.
- A top-up year with a company placement keeps you in France for roughly twelve months, well beyond 180 days, so ask ICP before you leave rather than after.
- Keep your AI2 admission letter and, once enrolled, your certificate of enrolment: they are the documents that show you are a student abroad.
- If your residence is sponsored by an employer or by a family member, ask your sponsor how your departure affects it before you resign or travel.
- Your residence must be valid when you file with Campus France UAE: the pre-consular file asks for your passport and Emirates ID.
Campus France UAE and the visa: order, fees and timing
Admission letter first, then Campus France UAE, then VFS Global.
Once a French institution has admitted you, the visa route from the Emirates runs through two organisations, in a fixed order. Campus France UAE warns that a visa application filed without its procedure is refused automatically.
| Step | Where | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Pre-consular file on EeF: passport and Emirates ID, CV, last diploma and transcripts, admission letter, language certificate if required | Online | AED 700 by bank transfer, only after the payment email; no cash or card | 4 to 6 working days in low season, 5 to 7 in high season |
| 2. In-person meeting with Campus France UAE | As scheduled by Campus France UAE, whose office is at the Alliance Française in Oud Metha, Dubai | Included | Arranged once the payment is validated |
| 3. Long-stay visa form on France-Visas | Online | Paid at VFS Global in the next step | Before you go to Abu Dhabi |
| 4. Lodging the file, two copies of each document | VFS Global, Abu Dhabi branch; walk-ins accepted for long-stay students | VFS AED 99.08 plus visa AED 201 (€50) | 3 to 4 weeks |
| 5. Validating the VLS-TS | Online, after arrival in France | Tax set by Service-Public | Within 3 months of arrival |
Neither the EeF review nor the visa processing can be accelerated, and Campus France UAE recommends starting at least two months before departure. Service-Public (F2231) gives the first student visa a validity of between four months and one year. The checklist, refusal risks and document details are in our student visa guide for UAE residents, and the financial evidence the consulate expects is explained in our proof of funds guide.
What the year costs in dirhams
About AED 83,500 for tuition and the living allowance, plus AED 1,000 of procedure fees.
The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at AED 3.6725, as the UAE government portal states. Using the European Central Bank reference rate for 28 October 2026 (€1 = US$1.1133), one euro is worth about AED 4.0886. Amounts below are rounded to the dirham.
| Item | In euros | In dirhams |
|---|---|---|
| AI2 final-year tuition (either BSc) | €9,900 | AED 40,477 |
| Minimum visa resources, 12 × €877.50 | €10,530 | AED 43,053 |
| Tuition plus visa resources | €20,430 | AED 83,530 |
| Campus France UAE, VFS Global and visa fee | Set in dirhams | AED 1,000.08 |
| Later, if you continue: AI2 MSc Year 1 | €12,500, or from €10,500 after scholarship | AED 51,107, or from AED 42,930 |
Tuition includes teaching, labs, projects, examinations and competency-block juries, plus visa guidance from admission to arrival. Housing, living costs, insurance, travel and visa fees are extra. According to the AI2 tuition fees page, scholarships are possible for the final year and are assessed automatically; the criteria include merit (record and interview), applying through a partner institution and paying the year in full. The amount in your admission letter is the one that applies, for the first year of enrolment.
Two AI2 final years open to HND and Level 5 holders
One for software, one for industrial data.
AI2, the Applied Institute of Artificial Intelligence, offers the third year of its Bachelor in Applied AI as a stand-alone one-year entry for students with two years of higher education in computing: the programme pages list the Pearson HND, BTEC Level 5 diplomas, the French BTS and the first two years of a BSc, and admissions maps each one against the curriculum.
Software and AI applications
Industrial data and Industry 4.0
Both titles are certified by the French Ministry of Labour and active on France Compétences. Graduates receive the AI2 bachelor’s diploma, and the year prepares a professional certification registered in the RNCP at level 6, recognised by the French State at bachelor’s level (EQF 6).
Teaching is entirely in English and French is not required. Admissions asks for B2 English, shown by IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72 or an equivalent test; if your HND was delivered in English, a letter from your college confirming the medium of instruction may stand in for the test. Classes are held on the campus in Écouen, 22 minutes by Transilien line H from Paris Gare du Nord. While enrolled, a student visa allows paid work of up to 964 hours a year (Service-Public F2713).

After the final year
A bachelor’s in one year, then a master’s if you want to stay.
Graduates of either final year can apply to the shared AI2 MSc Year 1 and then choose a specialisation; the Industry 4.0 route leads most naturally to IoT or cybersecurity, with data science considered on review. For staying in France afterwards, Service-Public (F17319, verified 1 June 2026) reserves the one-year permit to look for work or start a company for holders of a professional licence, a Mastère Spécialisé, an MSc labelled by the Conférence des grandes écoles, or any diploma at least equivalent to a master’s, obtained in the last 12 months. Our page on the master’s in France for UAE residents covers that next step from the Emirates.

Frequently asked questions
Can a non-Emirati living in Dubai do a top-up year in France?
Yes. Campus France UAE handles applications from Emirati and international students resident in the UAE alike. What you need is valid UAE residence, an HND or equivalent covering two years of relevant higher education, and an admission from a French institution.
Is a BTEC HND from a UAE college enough for the final year?
An HND is a level 5 qualification on the UK scale, which corresponds to two years of higher education. AI2 lists the Pearson HND and BTEC Level 5 among its final-year entry qualifications, provided the subject is computing or a related field.
Where do UAE residents file a French student visa?
After the Campus France UAE procedure, you complete the long-stay form on France-Visas and lodge your file at the VFS Global branch in Abu Dhabi. Campus France UAE says walk-ins are accepted for long-stay student visas and that processing takes three to four weeks.
How much does Campus France UAE charge?
The fee section of the Campus France UAE visa page lists AED 700 for the pre-consular procedure, paid by bank transfer after a payment email. VFS Global charges AED 99.08 and the visa fee is AED 201, or €50.
Will I lose my UAE residence visa if I study in France for a year?
The UAE government portal says a residence visa lapses after more than 180 days outside the country, but lists students enrolled abroad who hold valid residence visas among the exemptions. It asks residents to check with ICP whether this applies in their emirate.
What is the total cost of the top-up year in dirhams?
At AI2, final-year tuition is €9,900, about AED 40,477, while the visa asks you to show €877.50 per month, which is about AED 43,053 over twelve months. Add about AED 1,000 of Campus France, VFS and visa fees.
Can I continue to a master’s after the top-up?
Yes. An AI2 final-year graduate can move on to the common first year of the AI2 MSc after an admissions review, then pick a specialisation. In France, the one-year permit to look for work after studies is tied to master’s-level diplomas.
