Finished a BCA and weighing a master’s in France? How France reads a three-year Indian computing degree, which year of a master’s it opens, what to do if your BCA is a four-year honours degree or you already hold an MCA, and how to close the maths and data gaps before you fly.
Is a BCA enough for a master’s in France?
Yes, and there is an intergovernmental text behind that answer.
France and India signed an agreement on the mutual recognition of academic qualifications during President Macron’s state visit to India in 2018; it came into force in 2019. According to Campus France India, it treats a bachelor’s degree in India as comparable to the licence in France, and a master’s in India as comparable to a French master’s or master’s-level degree. On the Indian side it covers degrees from members of the Association of Indian Universities and from institutions approved, recognised or accredited by the Indian authorities to award degrees.
The licence is the French first cycle. Campus France describes it as six semesters and 180 ECTS credits, followed by four more semesters and 120 ECTS for a master’s. So the French reading of a BCA is simple: you have completed the first cycle, and the natural next step is the first year of a master’s, often called M1. It is neither a shortcut to Year 2 nor a gap that needs an extra bachelor’s year.
Three-year BCA, BCA (Honours) or BCA plus MCA: which route opens?
Your exact degree, not just the letters BCA, decides the starting year.
India now has two undergraduate formats side by side. UGC’s Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, written to apply the National Education Policy 2020, awards a bachelor’s after a three-year programme with 120 credits, and a four-year UG degree (Honours) with 160 credits, or Honours with Research. The same framework numbers courses for the first year of a two-year master’s and for a one-year master’s, which mirrors the logic French institutions apply: three years lead to a two-year master’s, while longer first degrees can be reviewed for later entry.
| Your degree | How France reads it | Typical entry | At AI2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| BCA, three years (6 semesters) | Comparable to a licence, the French first cycle | Master’s Year 1 (M1), two years in total | MSc in 2 years, from the shared applied AI Year 1 |
| BCA (Honours), four years | Longer first cycle, read case by case | Year 1, or Year 2 if the programme accepts four-year degrees | Direct entry into Year 2 (18 months) can be requested, subject to academic review of a related four-year degree |
| BCA plus MCA | Master’s in India, comparable to a master’s-level degree in France | Year 2 or a specialised one-year programme | 11-month Fast-Track (data science, February 2027) or 18-month direct entry |
| BCA plus work experience | Experience strengthens the file; the degree still sets the level | Usually Year 1 | MSc in 2 years; AI2 lists the BCA among degrees for which the Fast-Track is not the right entry |

What a BCA brings to an AI or data master’s
A head start on code and systems; the usual work is on maths and data.
A BCA is already a computing degree, so you do not need to prove you can program; you need to show which programming, data and maths you have actually done. Syllabi differ between universities, so build the comparison from your own mark sheets. The table below sets the first-year modules of AI2’s MSc next to the BCA papers worth looking for.
| MSc Year 1 module at AI2 | Hours | Look for these on your BCA mark sheets | If it is missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Python for Data Science | 28 h | Python, or any programming paper with lab work | Work through NumPy and Pandas on a real dataset |
| SQL & Databases | 35 h | DBMS, RDBMS, SQL lab | Practise joins, window functions and indexes in PostgreSQL |
| Introduction to Machine Learning | 28 h | Statistics, probability, an ML or data mining elective | Revise probability and linear algebra before the course |
| Cloud Computing · AWS & Azure | 21 h | Operating systems, networking, web technologies | Deploy one small web app to a cloud free tier |
| Data Engineering & Pipelines | 28 h | File structures, data structures, software engineering | Learn what an ETL job and a scheduler do |
| Introduction to Deep Learning | 21 h | Discrete mathematics, numerical methods | Refresh matrix operations and derivatives |

What admissions will probe
How to bridge the gaps before your first semester
Start early: the gaps are usually narrow, but they take steady practice to close.
- 1Map your mark sheets against the target programmeList every paper of your six semesters with its marks, then tick it against the first-year modules of the programmes you shortlist. The gaps appear in an hour.
- 2Rebuild the maths you will actually useLinear algebra, probability and descriptive statistics carry most of machine learning. Work through exercises, not just videos.
- 3Move from programming to data programmingIf your BCA used C, Java or PHP, add Python with NumPy and Pandas. Clean and explore one public dataset end to end.
- 4Sharpen SQLIf your BCA covered SQL, bring it to the level of joins across several tables, subqueries and window functions.
- 5Prove your English at B2AI2 asks for B2: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72 or equivalent. A medium-of-instruction certificate may support a waiver; admissions confirms the evidence accepted.
- 6Write a statement of purpose that explains the BCASay why a two-year master’s in France fits after your BCA: the subjects you want to deepen, the role you aim for, and why an applied programme suits you.
Applying from India with a BCA: the procedure
Two files, one set of documents: the school’s application, then Études en France and the visa.
India follows the Études en France procedure run by Campus France. According to Campus France India, you create an account on the Études en France portal, fill in your academic records, language skills and the CV and statement of purpose sections, and upload your passport, photograph, CV and every mark sheet and certificate. After the file is validated you pay the processing fee, which rose from INR 18,500 to INR 20,000 on 1 August 2026, then attend an academic interview with your original documents.
After the interview, an automated email tells you that you can move to the visa stage: you fill in the application on France-Visas and book an appointment at a VFS centre, where every applicant registers biometric data in person. Campus France India asks students to submit as soon as they receive an unconditional acceptance and at least three months before the intake. Prepare for the interview with our list of Campus France interview questions; as a BCA graduate, expect to explain why you chose a master’s in France over an MCA in India, and have a precise answer ready.

Year 2 can cost less out of pocket: work-study is possible from MSc Year 2 in France, with tuition paid by the employer’s training fund and a salary, and the final six-month internship carries a legal minimum stipend of €4.50 an hour in 2026 (Service-Public F32131). Neither is guaranteed at admission. Our full cost of studying in France for Indian students covers rent, insurance and loans.
What a French master’s after a BCA leads to
The level of the final diploma, not the length of your bachelor’s, decides what comes next.
Once you hold a diploma at least equivalent to a master’s obtained in France, Service-Public (F17319, verified 1 June 2026) describes a one-year job-search or business-creation permit. During it you can work in a job related to your studies paid more than €2,800.53 gross a month, without the 964-hour limit. For Indian nationals, Campus France India describes a post-study visa of 12 months renewable once, for 24 months in total, under a bilateral arrangement; details are in our guide to the France post-study work visa for Indian students.
Later, the talent permit for qualified employees requires a French master’s-level diploma and a contract paying at least €39,582 gross a year, for up to four years (F16922). Frequently asked questions
Can I do a master’s in France after a BCA?
Yes. Under the India-France agreement on mutual recognition of academic qualifications, an Indian bachelor’s is comparable to the French licence, the degree that leads into a master’s. A three-year BCA usually opens Year 1 of a two-year master’s.
Is a three-year BCA accepted for a two-year MSc in France?
Yes. French master’s degrees are built on a three-year first cycle followed by four semesters and 120 ECTS. AI2 names the BCA among the three-year bachelor’s degrees that open Year 1 of its two-year MSc.
Can a BCA graduate join the second year of a master’s directly?
Usually not with a three-year BCA. A four-year BCA (Honours) or a BCA followed by an MCA can be reviewed for later entry. At AI2, a related four-year degree can lead to an 18-month direct entry into Year 2, subject to academic review.
Do I need to study more maths before an AI master’s after a BCA?
Often a little. Machine learning relies on linear algebra, probability and statistics. Check your mark sheets for these papers and revise what is missing before you start; the AI2 interview checks Python and SQL foundations.
Is MCA or a master’s in France better after a BCA?
It depends on your goal. An MCA keeps you in India; a French master’s adds an internship in France and, once you hold a master’s-level diploma, access to France’s post-study permits. Compare the cost and the career you want.
How much does a master’s in France cost after a BCA?
Public universities charge non-EU students €3,950 a year for a master’s in 2026-27 (Campus France). At AI2, MSc Year 1 is €12,500, or from €10,500 after scholarship. The student visa also requires at least €877.50 a month.
