Working While Studying in France: Jobs, Internships and Work-Study

Can you work while studying in France? Yes. International students have three ways to earn money and gain experience during their studies: a part-time job, a paid internship, and work-study (alternance).

1. A part-time job

With a student residence permit, you can work up to 964 hours a year — about 60% of a full-time year — alongside your studies. Most students work in services, tutoring, retail or campus jobs. The legal minimum wage in France is the SMIC.

2. A paid internship

Many programmes include a company placement. At AI2, MSc students spend six months in a company at the end of the programme, and the final Bachelor year includes a placement. In France, internships longer than two months must be paid at least the legal minimum gratification.

3. Work-study (alternance)

Work-study combines courses and a job under an apprenticeship or professionalisation contract. The company pays a salary and the training is funded through its OPCO — so the tuition is covered. At AI2, work-study is possible in MSc Year 2: typically two days at AI2 and three days in the company, then full time in the company after mid-May. An apprentice’s minimum salary is a percentage of the SMIC that depends on age and year. Read Work-Study at AI2.

What to check

  • Your residence permit allows you to work; work-study for international students requires a work authorisation requested online by the employer.
  • Work-study depends on finding a company: start early and prepare your CV and portfolio.
  • Your studies come first: part-time work must stay compatible with your timetable.
