Moving from Doha to a French campus? You need a long-stay student visa, and your path runs through Études en France before it reaches France-Visas and the visa centre. Here is who decides what, the funds to show in riyals, a calendar for the 2027 intakes, and what to do in your first three months in France.
Which visa does a student in Qatar need?
One category covers nearly everyone enrolling in a French higher-education programme.
Service-Public, the French government’s official guide, says a foreign student must first request a VLS-TS marked étudiant, a long-stay visa that also works as a residence permit and lasts from four months to one year. Two conditions apply: you are enrolled or pre-enrolled at a public or private higher-education institution or a higher professional training body, and you can show resources of at least €877.50 a month. After the first year you switch to a one-year or multi-year student card.
Anyone travelling only to sit an entrance exam needs a different document, the short-stay “étudiant-concours” visa. For a doctorate, Campus France points to the talent passport route instead. The rest of this guide concerns bachelor’s and master’s students.
Does Qatar use Études en France?
Yes, and that changes where your application starts.
Qatar is on both official lists: the 75 countries and territories named by Campus France and the table on Service-Public, which counts 72 countries and sorts them by nationality. Students on those lists prepare their file in the Études en France platform, which manages enrolment procedures up to the visa request. Through it you create a private electronic file, follow the instructions, and exchange messages with the Campus France office and with your institution. Campus France notes that a fee is charged for this service. It does not publish the Doha amount, so ask the office.
| Your situation | Where to begin | Worth checking |
|---|---|---|
| Qatari citizen living in Qatar | Études en France, Campus France Qatar | Ministry pre-approval, if you will need equivalency |
| Expatriate resident of Qatar, non-EU passport | Ask Campus France Qatar which office handles you | Campus France frames the rule by residence, Service-Public by nationality |
| EU, EEA or Swiss passport | No visa needed | Enrolment route with your institution |
| French or European baccalauréat in Doha, first-year place | Parcoursup and Études en France | Parcoursup calendar, opening December 2026 |
Campus France Qatar sits inside the Institut Français du Qatar in Al Tarfa (Villa 7, Street 860, Zone 68). Reach it on +974 3168 0131 or at campus@if-qatar.com. Its role is advice and the Études en France stage. Visa decisions are taken by the French authorities, not by Campus France.
The application, step by step
What the embassy, Campus France and Service-Public each describe, in one sequence.

Where do you hand in your file in Doha?
The embassy sends applicants to a visa centre. Check the booking page for the current address.
The embassy’s consular section manages visa requests for people going to France to study, work or travel, and its visa page tells applicants to lodge their file at the visa centre they depend on. In December 2023 the embassy announced that the Doha centre had moved to the Al Nuaimi Building, Zone 45, in the Old Airport area, with appointments from Sunday to Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm, booked through France-Visas. Qatar News Agency carried the statement, and The Peninsula reported the ambassador welcoming a new partnership with VFS Global. We found no newer announcement, so confirm the address on your appointment letter.
Do not phone France Consulaire, the embassy’s general helpline, about your application: its own page says visa questions are out of scope. For academic and Études en France questions, use Campus France Qatar. For the visa itself, use the channels shown on France-Visas.
Which documents should you prepare?
Your official checklist comes from France-Visas. These are the items to gather early.
| Document | Who provides it | Tip for applicants in Qatar |
|---|---|---|
| Passport valid for your whole stay, ID photos | You | Check the expiry date against your whole stay, not only the first year |
| Admission letter stating programme, intake and tuition | Your institution | Ask for it in the name exactly as on your passport |
| Diplomas and transcripts, with certified translations | Your school or university | Allow time for Arabic documents to be translated |
| Proof of resources | You, a sponsor or a funder | See the funding table below |
| Proof of accommodation for your first weeks | You or your institution | Keep a dated confirmation |
| Travel insurance until you join French health insurance | You | Buy it once your dates are firm |
How do you prove €877.50 a month from Qatar?
The floor applies to everyone. The paperwork depends on who pays.
Service-Public sets the requirement at €877.50 a month, in force at its 1 August 2026 check. AI2’s visa guidance, based on that figure, gives €10,530 for twelve months and notes that tuition comes on top. In riyals, at QAR 4.0775 per euro (Qatar Central Bank website, 30 October 2026), that is QAR 3,580 a month and QAR 42,940 for a year. The riyal is pegged to the US dollar at the QAR 3.64 QCB lists as fixed, not to the euro, so check the conversion again when you print your bank letter and add a margin.
| Who funds you | Evidence to prepare | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Your own savings | Bank certificate in your name showing the amount for the year | Tuition is separate from this amount |
| Parent or sponsor in Qatar | Attestation of financial support with the sponsor’s proof of income | AI2 says this is accepted in most procedures; check your list |
| Employer | Treated as a sponsor: attestation of support with proof of income; ask France-Visas what it accepts | Employer-funded study also falls under the Qatari pre-approval rule |
| Qatari government scholarship | Award letter covering living costs, with amount and duration | At renewal, Service-Public asks for an attestation from the paying body |
| French government or EU award | Proof of the award | Listed by Service-Public for renewals |
An institutional discount does not help here: AI2 states that its own scholarship reduces tuition but does not count towards the monthly requirement. Our guide to proof of funds for the France student visa goes further on bank letters.
A calendar for the 2027 intakes
Two French rules and one Qatari rule set the rhythm.
Three clocks run at once. AI2’s visa guidance advises starting six to eight months before an intake. The embassy lets you file up to six months before departure. If you hold a Qatari pre-approval, the ministry says face-to-face study must begin within six months of issue, otherwise the approval lapses and you reapply under the rules then in force.
| Timing before you start | Task | Who |
|---|---|---|
| 8 to 6 months | Decide on your programme; ask the ministry about pre-approval; gather diplomas | You, MoEHE |
| 6 to 5 months | Apply, attend the interview, receive the admission letter | Institution |
| 5 to 3 months | Études en France file; France-Visas form; book and attend the appointment; prepare funds and housing | You, Campus France Qatar, visa centre |
| 2 to 1 months | Follow the decision; book travel and insurance | French authorities, you |
| Within 6 months of pre-approval | Begin face-to-face study | You |
| Within 3 months of arrival | Validate the VLS-TS online | You |
Applying for AI2’s February 2027 intake? The priority deadline and the complete visa file both fall on 30 November 2026, with enrolment and deposit by 15 December 2026, which is tight from a standing start. May and September 2027 are also planned, and admissions sends their dates on request. For a wider view of delays, see our page on the France student visa processing time.
How do the two systems meet? Treat the Qatari approval and the French visa as a pair. Ask for the approval only once you know your intake, because a slipping visa appointment eats into the same six months. And since the approval names one country, university, discipline and stage, changing institution late means going back to the department. Our guide to studying in France from Qatar covers those conditions and the budget, and our overview of studying in France from the Gulf compares the wider region.
Your first months in France
The visa is only the first half. These dates catch people out.
| Rule | Detail | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Validate the VLS-TS | Online, within 3 months of arrival. It keeps your stay lawful and lets you cross the Schengen border again | €100 (QAR 410) |
| Renew your right to stay | Online, from 4 months to 2 months before your document expires | €100 for a one-year card; €150 for a multi-year card (QAR 610) |
| Late renewal | A regularisation visa fee applies, except for force majeure or a valid visa | €180 extra (QAR 730) |
| Resources at renewal | Still at least €877.50 a month | See your bank letter |
| Multi-year card | After one year; length matches the years left in your cycle | As above |
At renewal, the prefecture checks that your studies are real and serious, looking at attendance, exam results, diplomas obtained and your explanation for any change of course. One repeated year per cycle does not by itself call that into question.
Paid work is allowed up to 964 hours a year without a separate work permit (Service-Public F2713), and apprenticeship contracts follow their own rules. Read working while studying in France for the detail. Holders of a French diploma at least equivalent to a master’s may also ask for a job-search or business-creation permit after graduating (Service-Public F17319).
What if your visa is refused or delayed?
There is a route, and it has deadlines.
Campus France describes the steps on its Kuwait site, in terms that concern French consular decisions generally. Consular authorities must give reasons when they refuse a visa to a foreign student. You can first ask the consul to review the decision. If that fails, you can go to the Commission de recours contre les décisions de refus de visa within two months of an explicit or implicit refusal, a compulsory step before any court action. If the commission rejects your appeal, you have two more months to go to the administrative court in Nantes.
Tell your institution straight away too. At AI2, deposit and refund conditions, including those for a refused visa, are set out in the admission letter, so read that clause before you pay. Nobody can guarantee a visa: admission does not secure one, and the decision rests with the French authorities.
How AI2 supports applicants from Qatar
Documents and guidance for each stage, from admission to arrival.
AI2, the Applied Institute of Artificial Intelligence, teaches in English on its Écouen campus, 22 minutes from Paris Gare du Nord, and lists visa guidance as included for every student. You receive the admission letter stating programme, intake and tuition, an enrolment certificate once the deposit is paid, a programme description for the Campus France stage, and housing and arrival information. Tuition runs from €9,000 a year (QAR 36,700) for Bachelor Years 1 and 2 and from €10,500 (QAR 42,810) after scholarship for MSc Year 1. Full rules are on the tuition fees page, and programmes are detailed on the MSc Applied AI and Data Science page.
Be ready to explain why your programme fits your studies and work plans. If you need a Qatari pre-approval or equivalency, ask the ministry about the programme before enrolling: decisions on lists and recognition are its own, and AI2 makes no claim about them. The general steps also appear in AI2’s visa guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to study in France from Qatar?
Yes, unless you hold an EU, EEA or Swiss passport. For a bachelor’s or master’s programme you need a long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit, the VLS-TS marked étudiant, valid for four months to one year.
Is Études en France mandatory in Qatar?
Qatar is on the Campus France list and the Service-Public table, so students covered by the procedure use the Études en France platform before the visa. Expatriate residents should ask Campus France Qatar which office handles their case.
Where is the French visa centre in Doha?
The embassy announced in December 2023 that it had moved to the Al Nuaimi Building, Zone 45, in the Old Airport area, with appointments from Sunday to Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm. Confirm the address on your France-Visas appointment letter.
How much money do I need to show for a French student visa?
At least €877.50 a month, about QAR 3,580, or €10,530 (QAR 42,940) for twelve months, at the Qatar Central Bank rate of 30 October 2026. Tuition comes on top.
How early can I apply for the visa?
The French Embassy in Qatar says you can file up to six months before departure, and warns that appointment and processing times can lengthen depending on the season. Start your Études en France file well before that.
Can my parents sponsor me from Qatar?
AI2’s guidance says a sponsor’s attestation of financial support with proof of income is accepted in most procedures. Check the list that France-Visas gives for your own application before you rely on it.
What must I do after arriving in France?
Validate your VLS-TS online within three months and pay the €100 tax. Later, renew online between four and two months before your document expires, showing the same resources and proof of enrolment.
