“How long does the French student visa take?” has two honest answers: the time the consulate takes to decide, and the time it takes to get your file in front of it. The second depends largely on you, because the visa is the last of four stages, each with its own queue: admission by your school, the Études en France procedure run by Campus France in your country, an appointment at the visa application centre, and the consulate’s decision. This guide shows what each stage depends on, why the figure of 15 days circulates, and how to plan for AI2’s February, May and September 2027 intakes.
How long does each stage of the student visa take?
| Stage | Who handles it | Official time limit | What sets the pace |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Admission | Your school | None set by law | How fast you send a complete file; at AI2, file review and an online interview |
| 2. Études en France file and interview | Campus France in your country | Local calendar; some offices set a minimum notice | Corrections requested on your file, interview slots, the Campus France fee |
| 3. Visa appointment | VFS Global, TLScontact or the consulate | None | Booking calendar of the centre you use |
| 4. Consular decision | French consulate | Implicit refusal after 2 months without a reply | Your nationality, special checks, the season |
| 5. After arrival | You, on the ANEF portal | Validate the VLS-TS within 3 months | A few minutes online, plus the tax |
Only two time limits in that table are fixed by the authorities, and neither is a promise of speed. The two-month rule is the point at which silence becomes a refusal you can appeal; the three-month rule applies after you land. Everything before the decision depends on how quickly you, your school and the local Campus France office move.
Is it really 15 days?
Partly. The number exists, but it does not come from a national rule for student visas.
The best-known figure comes from the Schengen short-stay system. Under the EU Visa Code, a short-stay visa application must normally be decided within 15 calendar days, a period that can be extended to 45 days. A long-stay student visa is a national visa, so that rule does not apply to it. France-Visas, the official visa website, gives no fixed duration for long-stay visas: processing times “vary depending on the nationality of the applicant, the purpose of the stay and the local visa issuing conditions”, and some files need special checks, of civil status for example, which extend them.
Some Campus France offices do quote a local figure. Campus France Saudi Arabia, for instance, says an answer is given within 15 days once the file is submitted at the visa centre. Treat such a figure as a description of one consulate’s practice, valid for the decision stage only, never as the total time from admission to visa.
The Études en France stage: where files slow down
If you live in one of the 75 countries and territories covered by Études en France, the Campus France procedure comes before the visa. You create an online file, upload your documents and admission letter, pay the Campus France fee (its amount depends on your country), attend the interview where one applies, and wait for validation. Only then can you book the visa appointment. Campus France India, for example, asks students to submit their file as soon as they receive an unconditional acceptance letter and at least three months before the intake.
Corrections are a common cause of delay at this stage. A Campus France adviser checks the file and sends it back if a transcript is missing, a translation is not certified or your study plan does not match your background. Each round trip costs days. Prepare the interview as seriously as the file: our list of Campus France interview questions covers the 22 questions students are most often asked.
Visa appointments: VFS Global, TLScontact or the consulate
According to France-Visas, you submit your application to the French consulate or to a certified service provider, which differs from country to country, in the country where you legally reside. The provider takes your documents and biometrics; the consulate decides. Appointment availability is not published as an official waiting time and changes week by week, so check the provider’s booking calendar as soon as your Campus France file is validated. France-Visas is explicit: where an appointment system exists, respecting deadlines is the applicant’s responsibility.
The visa fee is set in euros: France-Visas indicates €50 for applicants from countries using Études en France and €99 for other countries, with special cases possible. The provider’s service fee comes on top. You will also need proof of resources of at least €877.50 a month, the amount in force since 1 August 2026 according to Service-Public.
When are the peak months?
Most programmes in France start in September, so the spring and summer concentrate Campus France interviews and visa appointments for that intake. Our France student visa guide for India, based on Campus France India’s procedure, has students opening their Études en France file between February and April for a September start. Applying for a February or May intake moves your procedure away from that rush, which is one practical reason AI2 offers three start dates.
Whatever the intake, the risky period is the last month before the start date: a file that needs one more correction or one more document at that point can push your arrival past the beginning of classes.

On 27 October 2026, a February 2027 start leaves about four months: tight but workable if your documents are ready, since the priority deadline and the complete visa file are both expected by 30 November 2026. The Fast-Track MSc in Applied AI and Data Science, taught on the Écouen campus near Paris, starts in February only. A May 2027 start sits right inside the recommended window today, and September 2027 gives you the most room. Fees and key dates are on AI2 tuition fees 2027.
What delays a French student visa file?
- An incomplete Études en France file. Each correction requested by Campus France sends the file back to you before validation.
- Documents that need checking. France-Visas notes that some visas require special checks, such as civil status, or consultation of other French authorities, which extends processing.
- Funds that do not add up. Resources below €877.50 a month, a sponsor without proof of income or unexplained deposits lead to questions or a refusal.
- A study plan that does not hold together. If your programme, past studies and career plan do not connect, the interview and the consulate will notice.
- No appointment slot. In busy months, the first free date at the visa centre can be far off.
- A passport that expires too soon. Renewing it mid-procedure restarts several steps.

What to do if your visa is running late
- 1Tell your school immediatelyAt AI2, admissions can confirm what is still possible for your intake and whether the next one, May or September 2027, is an option. Deferral and deposit conditions are set out in your admission letter.
- 2Keep your travel plans flexibleFrance does not issue visas on arrival, France-Visas says. Do not book a non-refundable flight before the visa is in your passport.
- 3Follow your file, do not resubmit itTrack progress through the provider’s website and answer any request from Campus France or the consulate the same day.
- 4Count two months from submissionWithout an answer after two months, the application is deemed refused. You can then appeal, as you can against any long-stay refusal.
- 5Appeal within 30 days if refusedFor a long-stay visa, the appeal goes first to the Commission for Appeals against Visa Refusal Decisions (CRRV) in Nantes, by post, in French and signed. This step is mandatory before any court.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a French student visa take to process?
France-Visas gives no fixed time for long-stay visas: it varies with nationality, purpose of stay and local conditions. The whole procedure, from admission to visa, usually takes several months, which is why AI2 advises starting 6 to 8 months ahead.
Is the French student visa processed in 15 days?
Fifteen days is the EU rule for short-stay Schengen visas, not for long-stay student visas. Some Campus France offices quote about 15 days for the decision in their country, but that covers only the last stage.
How early should I start my French student visa?
AI2 advises starting 6 to 8 months before your intake. Where Campus France asks for it, as in India, submit your Études en France file at least three months before the start date.
What happens if the consulate does not answer?
France-Visas states that an application with no decision two months after submission is deemed refused. You can then appeal to the CRRV in Nantes within 30 days.
Can I get a French student visa on arrival?
No. France-Visas states that French authorities do not issue visas on arrival. Unless you are exempt, the visa must be issued before you travel.
How much does the French student visa cost?
France-Visas indicates €50 for students from countries using Études en France and €99 for others, plus the service provider’s fee and the Campus France fee where it applies.
