France has no official salary statistic for data scientists. INSEE, the national statistics office, reports pay by broad category: in 2024 a private-sector executive (cadre) earned on average €6,224 gross and €4,629 net a month, against €3,602 gross for all private-sector employees (Insee Première no. 2079, 23 October 2025). For a specific job you rely on recruitment firms’ salary studies and on APEC, the executive employment agency, which analyses salaries offered in job ads. This guide puts them side by side, converts gross into net and shows which figures matter for a French residence permit.
How much does a data scientist earn in France by experience?
Hays publishes a full experience ladder for the job in open access.
| Experience | Annual salary (Hays 2026) | Per month, divided by 12 |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 3 years (junior) | €47,000 to €52,000 | about €3,920 to €4,330 |
| 3 to 5 years | €52,000 to €57,000 | about €4,330 to €4,750 |
| 5 to 8 years (confirmed) | €57,000 to €73,000 | about €4,750 to €6,080 |
| More than 8 years (senior) | €73,000 to €89,000 | about €6,080 to €7,420 |
Hays gives these ranges in thousands of euros a year, as French salary studies usually do, without detailing fixed and variable pay. Two other sources help you place them. Michael Page, in its Étude de rémunérations 2027, publishes a single grid for “data engineer, data scientist” in the Paris region: €45,000 at the low end, €59,000 on average and €80,000 at the top, in gross annual fixed pay excluding bonuses. APEC looks at job ads instead: 80% of the salaries offered to data scientists fall between €35,000 and €60,000 gross a year, fixed and variable pay included, with an average of €46,000.
Read together, the sources tell a consistent story. A first data science job in France usually sits in the mid to high forties, the Paris region pays more, and the steepest rise comes between five and eight years of experience, when Hays’s range jumps by €16,000 at the top end.
Why do the salary sources disagree?
| Source | What it measures | Scope | Pay definition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hays, national study 2026 | Placements and market survey | France, by experience band | Ranges per year |
| Michael Page, study 2027 | Salaries of placed candidates | Paris region, regional adjustments | Gross, fixed, excluding variable |
| APEC job sheets | Salaries offered in job ads | France, all levels | Gross, fixed plus variable |
| INSEE Première no. 2079 | Payroll statistics for 2024 | All private-sector employees | Gross and net, monthly |
A firm’s study reflects the candidates it placed, often experienced people moving between companies, which pushes figures up. Job ads include many junior and regional posts, which pulls the APEC average down. When you negotiate a first offer, the APEC range tells you what employers write in their ads, and the Hays junior band what a competitive candidate can ask for.
Paris or the regions: how much does location change?
Michael Page publishes average gaps between the Paris region (Île-de-France) and the other regions.
| Region | Gap with the Paris region | Applied to the €59,000 average |
|---|---|---|
| Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur | -5% | about €56,050 |
| Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France | -5% to -10% | about €53,100 to €56,050 |
| Grand Est, Occitanie | -10% to -15% | about €50,150 to €53,100 |
| Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Pays de la Loire | -15% | about €50,150 |
| Bretagne, Centre-Val de Loire, Normandie | -15% to -20% | about €47,200 to €50,150 |
Many AI and data teams are concentrated in the Paris region. AI2’s campus in Écouen is 22 minutes from Paris Gare du Nord by Transilien line H, which keeps that job market within reach during your internship search.
From gross to net: what lands in your bank account?
French salaries are quoted gross (brut). Employee contributions are deducted before you are paid, then income tax is withheld at source.
| Employee contribution | Rate | Base |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pension, capped | 6.90% | Salary up to €4,005 a month |
| Basic pension, uncapped | 0.40% | Whole salary |
| CSG and CRDS | 9.2% + 0.5% | 98.25% of gross salary |
| Complementary pension (Agirc-Arrco), bracket 1 | 3.15% + 0.86% (CEG) | Up to €4,005 a month |
| Complementary pension, bracket 2 | 8.64% + 1.08% (CEG) + 0.14% (CET) | €4,005 to €32,040 a month |
| APEC contribution (executives) | 0.024% | Up to €16,020 a month |
For a salary below the €4,005 monthly ceiling, these legal contributions add up to about 20.9% of gross pay, so net pay is close to 79% of gross. The company health top-up (mutuelle) and provident scheme then take an employee share that varies by employer. INSEE’s 2024 figures for executives (€4,629 net for €6,224 gross) imply a net of about 74% of gross. We use that 74% to 79% band below.
| Gross a year | Gross a month | Net a month, before income tax |
|---|---|---|
| €40,000 | €3,330 | about €2,470 to €2,630 |
| €47,000 | €3,920 | about €2,900 to €3,090 |
| €52,000 | €4,330 | about €3,210 to €3,420 |
| €59,000 | €4,920 | about €3,640 to €3,880 |
| €73,000 | €6,080 | about €4,500 to €4,810 |
| €89,000 | €7,420 | about €5,490 to €5,860 |
What do data analysts, ML engineers and AI engineers earn?
| Role | Michael Page 2027, Paris region: low / average / high | Hays 2026 | APEC, salaries in job ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data analyst | €40,000 / €57,500 / €80,000 | €40k to €47k (0 to 3 years); €70k to €86k (8+ years) | €33k to €53k, average €43k |
| Data scientist | €45,000 / €59,000 / €80,000 | €47k to €52k (0 to 3 years); €73k to €89k (8+ years) | €35k to €60k, average €46k |
| Data engineer | €45,000 / €59,000 / €80,000 | Not published | €35k to €60k, average €47k |
| Machine learning engineer | €45,000 / €65,000 / €90,000 | Not published | No job sheet |
| AI engineer, AI developer | €45,000 / €63,000 / €90,000 | Not published | No job sheet |
Two patterns stand out. The roles that put models into production, machine learning engineer and AI engineer, carry the highest averages in the Michael Page grids, €65,000 and €63,000. And the entry point is similar across the data family, around €40,000 to €47,000, which means the first job title matters less than what you learn in your first two or three years. Our guide to data science vs artificial intelligence compares the two career tracks in more detail.
What raises a data scientist’s salary in France?
- 1Years in the roleHays’s top range rises from €52,000 in the first three years to €89,000 after eight. Michael Page also calculates its grids by years of experience in the job, not total career length.
- 2Taking models to productionAPEC lists industrialising models, testing releases and monitoring among the core missions and calls the mix of statistics and software development rare. Michael Page’s ML engineer average is €6,000 above the data scientist one.
- 3Working in the Paris regionUp to 20% more than some regions, according to Michael Page’s differentials.
- 4Real company experienceAPEC notes that employers may prefer candidates with at least three years of experience. An internship or work-study period is the first step on that ladder.
Which salary thresholds matter for your residence permit?
If you are not an EU citizen, your salary also decides which permit you can hold. The thresholds below are official values published by Service-Public.
| Permit | Main condition | Salary threshold | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Job-search or business-creation permit | Master’s-level diploma obtained in France in the last 12 months | Any job related to your studies paid more than €2,800.53 gross a month: no work authorisation needed | 1 year, not renewable |
| Employee permit after studies | Job related to your training | €2,800.53 gross a month or more: the employment situation cannot be held against you | 1 year, renewable |
| Talent permit, qualified employee | Diploma at least equivalent to a master’s obtained in France, contract of more than 3 months | €39,582 gross a year | Up to 4 years |
| Talent permit, EU Blue Card | Three years of higher education or equivalent experience, contract of 6 months or more | €59,373 gross a year (1.5 times the reference salary) | Up to 4 years |
Compare these with the salary bands above. Hays’s junior range for data scientists, €47,000 to €52,000, sits above the €39,582 talent threshold, and the monthly €2,800.53 floor equals €33,606 a year, below almost every data science offer. The EU Blue Card is the demanding one: €59,373 is roughly the Michael Page Paris-region average for data scientists, so many graduates reach it after a few years rather than in their first job.
