Weighing a data science master’s in France against staying in India or going elsewhere? The decision usually turns on three numbers: how many months your Indian degree lets you skip, what those months cost in rupees, and how quickly the programme gets you into a French company. This guide works through all three.
Which data science jobs is a French master’s training you for?
Before comparing programmes, be clear about the job you want at the end, because “data science” covers several roles with different toolkits.
The demand side is solid. Eurostat counted more than 10 million ICT specialists in EU employment in 2025, with France second only to Germany at 1.4 million. In the same Eurostat survey, 19.95% of EU enterprises with ten or more staff used at least one AI technology in 2025, and among firms that had considered AI but not adopted it, 70.89% gave a lack of relevant expertise as a reason. That gap is what a data science graduate fills: firms want people who can take data from a messy source to a model that runs in production.
| Role | What the job centres on | What your master’s syllabus should show |
|---|---|---|
| Data analyst or BI analyst | Dashboards, KPIs, SQL reporting for business teams | SQL, Power BI or Tableau, statistics, data storytelling |
| Data scientist | Predictive models that support decisions | Machine learning, feature engineering, model evaluation, Python |
| Machine-learning engineer | Taking models to production and keeping them healthy | Docker, CI/CD, experiment tracking, monitoring and drift |
| Data engineer | Pipelines, warehouses and data quality | ETL and ELT, Airflow, Kafka or dbt, cloud storage |
| Generative-AI engineer | LLM, retrieval and agent applications | Transformers, RAG, agents, evaluation and guardrails |
A useful test when you read a syllabus: count the hours spent on deployment and data engineering, not only on algorithms. If your degree already covered regression and classification, the hours on deployment are where a master’s adds most, and the projects you ship become the portfolio you show recruiters. Pay ranges for each role are covered in our data scientist salary guide for France.
How does your Indian degree decide the length of the course?
France has no single entry rule. Each institution reads your transcript and decides where you start, so the same Indian degree can mean two years at one place and eighteen months at another.
| Your Indian degree | Typical starting point | Usual time in France | Check before applying |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc (Maths, Statistics, CS) or BCA, 3 years | First year of a two-year master’s | About 2 years | Programming and statistics courses on your transcript |
| B.Tech or BE in CSE, IT, ECE, 4 years | First or second year, depending on the institution | 11 months to 2 years | Whether your programme was NBA-accredited when you graduated |
| B.Tech in another branch (mechanical, civil) | Usually the first year | About 2 years | Python, SQL and statistics you can evidence with projects |
| M.Sc, MCA or M.Tech | Often a shortened or final-year entry | 11 to 18 months at some institutions | Full syllabus and any work experience in data |
Why NBA accreditation can matter for a B.Tech
India has been a full signatory of the Washington Accord since 2014, represented by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), according to the International Engineering Alliance. Under the Accord, accredited engineering degrees from one signatory are mutually recognised by the others, but recognition only applies to programmes accredited by the signatory in its own country. In practice, an NBA-accredited four-year B.Tech is the cleanest evidence that your degree is at the level some shortened routes ask for. If your branch was not accredited in your graduation year, you may still be admitted; expect the institution to look more closely at your syllabus. Our article on a master’s in France after a B.Tech covers this entry question across subjects.
English is usually proven with IELTS, TOEFL or a medium-of-instruction certificate; requirements differ by institution. French is not usually required for English-taught programmes; check on each programme page whether a GRE score is asked.
What does a data science master’s in France cost in rupees?
Here is the public university benchmark, counted for the full two years rather than one, because that is the sum your family will actually fund.
| Item | Euros | Rupees |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition, 2 years at the non-EU rate (2026-27) | €7,900 | ₹8.39 lakh |
| CVEC student contribution, 2 years at €105 | €210 | ₹22,305 |
| Living costs, 24 months at the €877.50 visa minimum | €21,060 | ₹22.37 lakh |
| Long-stay visa validation tax after arrival | €100 | ₹10,621 |
| EEF procedure fee (Campus France India) | ₹20,000 | |
| Total before flights, visa and VFS fees | €29,270 + ₹20,000 | about ₹31.29 lakh |
Two cautions. The €877.50 a month is the minimum the visa file must show, not a comfortable budget in the Paris region. And private institutions set their own tuition, so compare total months as well as yearly fees: a shorter programme can cost more per year and less overall. Rent, insurance and loan options are broken down in our rupee budget for studying in France.
When should you apply from India?
Indian applicants go through Études en France, run by Campus France India, before the visa on France-Visas and a biometric appointment at a VFS centre. Working backwards from the intake avoids the most common mistake: an admission that arrives too late for the visa.
| When | What to do | Source |
|---|---|---|
| As early as possible | Shortlist programmes, prepare transcripts, English evidence, CV and a statement of purpose | Campus France India procedure |
| After your file is submitted | Pay the ₹20,000 EEF fee (₹18,500 before 1 August 2026); Eiffel and Charpak Excellence scholarship holders do not pay it | Campus France India |
| Once you hold an admission | Academic interview with Campus France India, online or in person, with original documents | Campus France India |
| At least 3 months before the intake | Lodge the France-Visas application once your acceptance is unconditional, then book biometrics at VFS | Campus France India |
| Within 3 months of arriving | Validate your VLS-TS online; a €100 tax is due at that point | Service-Public F2231 |

What can you earn while studying, and how long can you stay afterwards?
Two rules shape the return on a French master’s: what you may earn while studying, and how long you may stay to find a job afterwards.
During your studies
During the internship
After graduating
Once you find a job, you move to an employee or Talent permit. How the permits chain together, with salary thresholds, is set out in our guide to working in France after graduation.
Where does AI2’s data science MSc fit?
Taught entirely in English on the Écouen campus of the Applied Institute of Artificial Intelligence (Hub Nikola Tesla, a 22-minute Transilien H ride from Gare du Nord), the MSc Applied AI and Data Science leads to the AI2 MSc diploma and prepares the State-recognised professional title RNCP39978 « Architecte des systèmes d’information dans les processus industriels », registered at level 7 (EQF 7, master’s level) and certified by DATAKOO, the group company behind AI2. Its appeal for Indian applicants: three lengths of study, one title.
| AI2 route | Who it is for | Tuition | Months in France | Living at visa minimum | Total with ₹20,000 EEF and €100 tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MSc, 2 years | 3-year BSc or BCA in computing, maths, engineering or science | €23,500 (Year 1 from €10,500, Year 2 €13,000) | about 24 | €21,060 | about ₹47.64 lakh |
| Direct entry, 18 months | Related 4- or 5-year degree, after academic review | €11,300 after scholarship (standard €13,000) | 18 | €15,795 | about ₹29.09 lakh |
| Fast-Track, 11 months (February 2027 only) | Accredited 4-year B.Tech or BE, or a master’s, with Python, statistics and SQL | €11,000 if you apply before 15 November 2026 (then €12,500) | 11 | €9,652.50 | about ₹22.24 lakh |
The table shows why the entry route matters more than the yearly fee. The Fast-Track condenses Year 2 into five months on campus, February to June 2027, with 500 hours of courses (70% hands-on), followed by a six-month internship in a French company from July to December and a jury at the end of December 2027. The four certification blocks keep their full 224 hours; around them, 276 hours cover Python, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI and agents, NLP and computer vision, MLOps and business data. Full details are in the Fast-Track curriculum.
On the two-year and 18-month routes, Year 2 runs 500 hours: four 56-hour RNCP blocks (industrial information-system analysis, architecture and cybersecurity, prototyping and simulation, data and AI innovation), four 42-hour tracks (NLP and Transformers, advanced computer vision, generative AI and agents, MLOps), 84 hours of business data and final examinations. Year 1 is a 500-hour applied AI foundation shared with the cybersecurity and IoT MSc programmes.
Selection combines a review of your file with an online interview. You need B2 English, shown by IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72 or similar; for the Fast-Track the test is waived when your degree was taught in English. No French, GRE or GMAT is asked. On the programme page, AI2 gives indicative gross salaries of €47,000 to €52,000 a year for data scientists and €40,000 to €47,000 for data analyst and BI roles. February 2027 applicants should have both their application and their full visa file in by 30 November 2026, the priority deadline.
